What We Do

Build community-embedded innovation ecosystems

For ideas to be conceived at the confluence of science and local wisdom, the lab needs to move to the land. The ecosystem for free & fair meeting & mating of ideas must be rooted and embedded within the communities that need these solutions. Such an ecosystem creates a culture of innovation and powers evolution.

We engage with local communities to partner with them in setting up such an ecosystem - an open lab, enriched by a strong matrix of relationships between scientists and community stakeholders, and layered on a strong research platform.

The research platform is setup in accordance with principles of epidemiology, demographic surveillance and geospatial technology. The joint team maps the community, assigning unique identifiers to each individual, household and location. A data acquisition platform is setup in order to gather information and understand local evidence related to problems, risk factors and opportunities for change.

This joint venture between scientists and the local community enables the development of critical skills in the community for undertaking research and using technology, and lays the foundation for exchange of ideas and developing evidence-guided innovations at the confluence of science and local wisdom.

Co-develop evidence-based, community-centric innovations for impact

Our research & design team applies our SenseSimplifyActualize process to co-develop innovations with communities that are designed for impact. The sensing process aims to understand the challenge in the context of the community, associated causes and risk factors, and assess existing potential, opportunities and agents for change.  Simplification is an iterative process of arriving at a highly integrated, simplified solution that draws upon evidence, builds on the strengths of existing beliefs, practices and potential, and seamlessly integrates new practices. Actualization involves implementing, learning by doing, and refining innovations.

Scientifically evaluate innovations, programs and health systems

Our scientific team has several years of experience in applying scientific methods & principles to design and execute robust evaluation of innovations & programs in order to assess their impact on defined outcomes. We apply these methods not only to evaluate our own innovations, but also to evaluate large scale NGO and government programs and health systems.

Create blueprints for impact at scale

There is ample evidence from across industries and sectors, and importantly also from biological systems, that the one-size-fits-all model is not just inappropriate for scale, but also detrimental to innovation and evolution. For innovations and systems to be scalable, they have to designed such that they can evolve with the changing needs of society.

We believe that the challenge of having an impact at scale lies in the right balance between standardization, localization and personalisation at the different levels of implementation.   Thus, while standards may be defined based on universal principles at the policy and programmatic level, they need to be localized for implementation and personalized at the point individual contact.
